Traditional Madrasas have evolved into colleges and universities, reflecting a holistic approach to education that combines religious and secular knowledge seamlessly. In navigating the realm of religious education, Islamiya colleges confront challenges common to higher education institutions, such as adapting to diverse course offerings and competing on a global scale. However, they also grapple with unique hurdles in preserving Islamic culture and heritage while providing comprehensive education. Islamiya colleges have navigated challenges and seized opportunities to provide a balanced education, integrating religious and secular subjects effectively. Concerns about the workload of studying both Islamic and university courses are mitigated by the structured environment of Islamiya colleges, minimising distractions and enabling students to maintain equilibrium. The transition of parallel education to open universities, mandated by central government policy, presents challenges not unique to Islamiya colleges but affecting a significant number of students nationwide. Collaborative efforts with government agencies aim to collectively address these challenges. Student perceptions of Islamiya colleges have been influenced by societal biases and concerns about job prospects. Initiatives such as offering diverse courses and developing employability skills through career development programs aim to counter these perceptions, ensuring students are equipped for success in their chosen fields. IECI recognises the pivotal role of women in Islamic educational reform and has been proactive in addressing their educational needs. Historically, Muslim communities in Kerala held biases against women's education, but in the last few decades, efforts to educate women have intensified. Islamiya colleges have played a crucial role in this movement by promoting secular education and providing opportunities for girls to pursue their educational goals. While girls may initially be attracted to more liberal campuses, it is the Islamic principles embedded in these institutions that ensure their continued participation in education. Despite traditional biases and attempts to restrict girls' access to education, Islamiya colleges strive to create environments that respect Islamic values while empowering girls to pursue their educational aspirations freely. IECI is committed to fostering campuses that offer a fulfilling experience for girls, promoting genuine empowerment and freedom within the framework of Islam. Efforts are directed towards providing holistic support and opportunities for girls, including cultural and sporting competitions, enriching their educational journey and fostering their personal growth.
